"Like a gypsy, on a trail across the world we sail, living it large on the waves we won’t ride in vain," goes the catchphrase of Gypsy — the new single of Kolkata-based Rap-Rock outfit Underground Authority (UA). The wanderers have been on a treasure hunt since their inception in 2010. Every year, they seem to unlock a new jewel and raise the bar. The gang is currently busy practising aerobatics; the music video of the single is being shot with the help of stunt performers.

The sound of the track, which talks about Syria to mixolydian scale, may remind one of Red Hot Chilli Peppers (especially the guitar riffs in the backdrop) but the essence is signature UA.

"The song is about this cool character who is independent. We wanted to do something cool with the video. So, we got hold of bicycle and motorcycle stunt guys and made a 360-degree video. It is India’s first 360-degree stunt video by a band," says Adil Rashid, the band’s guitar player.

The single is a part of their upcoming album, Propaganda. The band has been releasing each track separately online, so that listeners can crave for more before the release.

Talent on mic
UA started off as an AR Rahman cover band. They shot to fame with the television reality show, India’s Got Talent and soon, gigs flowed turning them into rockstars overnight.

They do not believe in sticking to one language. Azaad, a track they released on Independence Day this year is in Hindi. It talks about the wrongdoings in the country and asks if the nation is independent at all. "We thought of writing the chorus in English but nothing could beat the essence of Urdu and Hindi," adds Rashid.

"Our audience expects us to make songs in Hindi as well, so we decided to have best of both," says Bubbla, the bass player. EPR Iyer, the frontman, has been a rapper since college days but of late, he has taken a liking to serious melodies. "It is not really a change because there is a lot of rap in the new album. But EPR likes singing now," laughs Rashid.

Bubbla, on the other hand, believes a change of music taste and the evolution in the industry overall is also a reason behind the renovation. "The world in itself is changing, whatever we are learning is through the music around us. When we heard our first album, we were kicked. Now, the new album is more interesting," he adds.

Bollywood bash
However, the band is thrilled to tour the city that made them television stars. Even Bollywood star Salman Khan requested them to do a remake of the Dabangg song back then.

"When we came here first, we thought the city is larger than life. Those days, we had a lot of time and we could stay for long," asserts Rashid.

What happened to the Dabangg song? "We did release the song online, we sent him (Salman) the song but after that, we don’t know where it went, probably lost for good," adds Bubbla.
