Krystle D'Souza is evidently ecstatic about dabbling in comedy for the first time. While Belan Wali Bahu pairs her character Rupa alongside a deceased husband, D'Souza asserts, there's nothing serious about the show. In an interview with mid-day, she talks about romancing her belan, acting with writer-producer Dheeraj Sarna, and her upcoming aspirations.

What made you give your nod to this show?
This is not a typically daily soap, even though it may come across as one. It's a comedy, a genre that I have never tackled before. So, this was an interesting offer for me. I have been in television for a while now, playing the bahu, beti, behen, and even working on a fantasy fiction in my last [Brahmarakshas]. So, I wanted to experiment with comedy.

What could get better than laughing the whole day?
There will be tears in this one too, but they will be tears of joy. There's nothing to cry about on this show, and that's what I love.

Tell us about your character.
My character's name is Rupa. In society, we underestimate the power of a woman and a belan [rolling pin]. Miracles are possible because of it. The story revolves around how a belan changed a girl's life. My husband [played by Dheeraj Sarna] dies of a mishap. And even though he is dead, the show is funny.

So, is this dark humour?
It's not dark humour. There were rumours that it is a horror comedy, but it isn't. It's a light-hearted sitcom that targets family audiences.

How would you rate your comic-timing?
As Krystle, I can confidently say my comic skills will be an 11 on 10. However, Rupa is not a funny person. She's often a victim of tragedies, which, in turn, make the show hilarious. She is not trying to do comedy, it happens to her.

Can you tell us about acting alongside Dheeraj Sarna?
Dheeraj sir is also the writer and producer of the show, and hence precisely understands the character. He knows what he wants out of the role. I don't think anyone can pull off the character of Laddoo as well as Dheeraj sir does. In the past, I have worked alongside some amazing actors. But, in Belan Wali Bahu, it's the belan that's cast opposite me more than anyone else.

There doesn't seem to be much scope for romance in this one.
There is no romance in this show. Zero.

Won't fans miss seeing you in a romantic role?
This is not the end of my career. I will do more shows, which may give me the scope for romance. So, I'm not worried. On TV, you get restricted to one kind of role. I've been lucky enough to get options. And doing comedy was always on my bucket list.

What are the other projects in the pipeline?
I want to do a web series soon. I will be doing one with Ekta Kapoor, but nothing is happening on that front yet because I am busy with this show.
