Welcome the New Year with a smile as Ranga Shankara brings in some rib tickling Kannada plays this week
Theatre lovers can now wrap up the year with a roundup of Kannada plays. All through the week, watch some popular plays that have come and gone and now before you bid adieu to 2010, here's your last chance to catch them this year.

Mayamruga
Nobody has ever seen a ghost. Nobody is sure if it exists at all. But we have all imagined it at some time in our lives. This week, a city based group Vatikutira presents Mayamruga, a play that promises to kindle our imagination. Written by the famous Kannada playwright Kuppali Puttappa Poornachandra Tejaswi, it is a story that explores the world beyond our vision and traces its roots.
Tejaswi and his friend set out for a graveyard in search of ghosts and encounter a dog, which they mistake for a ghost. Bringing out silly figments of the human mind, Mayamruga is a teaser for your brain and tries to explore the truth about the existence of ghosts. Explaining that the real ghost is our brain, Prithvi Aradhya, the director of Mayamruga says, "It deals with a psychological concept showing how human minds think about things which probably don't exist at all."

Gundaayana
Directed by Joseph, this play is penned by the famous Kannada humourist NA Kasturi and is based on his novel Chakradrushti. Through ten characters, which represent various people around us, the play will give you enough reasons to laugh your heart out. With the right mix of pun and wit here's something to get you smiling.

Heegadre Hege?
It is a humorous account presented by director Pramod Shiggaon of the lives of an elderly middle-class couple, Sarasamma and Mylarayya. The 'English-educated' Mylarayya is making a desperate attempt to relearn his mother tongue as it is declared the official language. Meanwhile, the couple's dream of winning a crore rupees in a television quiz is shattered. On the other hand, a fake film scriptwriter cons Sarasamma, who dreams of becoming a writer.

Kannambaadi Kattaddiddare
Directed by BV Rajaram, this play takes you back to pre-independent Karnataka when the Krishan Sagara Raja dam, Mysore was built. The play exposes the political and financial obstacles that came in the way of building the dam. It also shows how the erstwhile Maharaja had to battle with fellow Indians and the British government to build a structure that later protected thousands of lives from the floods.
