Gold lovers will miss out on buying the precious metal today as jewellery shops in the city remain shut despite it being Akshay Tritiya.

LBT strike to go on, even on Akshay Tritiya

Although traders in Mumbai called off their strike against Local Body Tax, traders in the city seem to be in no mood to call off their protest even for Akshaya Tritiya, one of the Hindu auspicious days in the year. To buy gold on Akshay Tritiya is said to be a good omen.

No glitter: The usual rush in a city-based jewellery shop on the day of Akshay Tritiya. This year, however, the scene is likely to be different. File Pic.

“The state government is not taking any concrete steps to solve the issue of LBT,” said treasurer of Pune Trader’s Association and owner of Ranka Jewellers, Fatehchand Ranka. He added that the state government is giving wrong information about LBT to citizens and therefore traders have decided to remain firm and keep their shops shut.

“We will also have to bear losses. Every year we deal in crores during Akshay Tritiya,” said Ranka. The owner of PN Gadgil Jewellers, Saurabh Gadgil said that all these days he’s been experiencing losses. So Akshay Tritiya would be just another day of fight against LBT. “To not open shops on Akshay Tritiya is a collective decision by traders, therefore losses hardly matter,” said Gadgil.

Meanwhile, president of Pune Trader’s Association Popatlal Oswal said a rally would be conducted on the various roads of the city on Tuesday to oppose LBT.u00a0“Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has not understood why we are opposing LBT which is why the decision on it is pending with the state government,” said Oswal.
