One of the city's biggest pop culture events, Comic Con Mumbai, is around the corner. While local cosplay champions are already armed with their elaborate costumes and play acts, there is a significant number of amateurs who are still doing the rounds of their tailors, confused about what avatar to don this year. So, for novices, a beginner's workshop in cosplay designing is just what the doctor ordered.

Animation graduate and photographer Sameer Bundela, who cosplayed as Skywrath Mange, a gaming character with an impressive 12-feet wide set of wings at Comic Con Bangalore last year, will be conducting the workshop. Having won the Indian Cosplaying Championship 2017, before representing the country at the Crown Championship of Cosplay in Chicago, the 27-year-old already has solid credentials.

But, he says, misconceptions surrounding the pop phenomenon in India continue. "Cosplaying is still a new concept here. It's not some underground geek subculture or fancy dress contest as most of us would like to think.

Designing costumes from scratch is a form of art," Bundela explains. Talking about the nitty-gritty of cosplaying and the challenges involved, he adds, "For the 12-foot long wings I designed, I had to ensure that they were sturdy, yet lightweight. The process is subjective and depends on the character one wants to adopt."

Bundela will conduct this weekend's workshop with Jeet Molankar, a three-time grand prize winner at the Mumbai and Hyderabad comic conventions. So, if the idea suits your fancy, this is your chance to learn all about building props, foam construction, designing costumes within a budget, and a whole lot more.
