'No broadcast of election related matter on radio during 48 hrs before polling'

The Nanded administration in Maharashtra has issued an order prohibiting broadcast of election related matter by the local All India Radio (AIR) centre and other radio channels in the district during 48 hours before polling for Lok Sabha elections 2024, reported news agency PTI. Collector Abhijit Raut, the returning officer for the Nanded Lok Sabha constituency, issued the order on Monday, reported PTI. The order cited a provision mentioned in a handbook published by the Election Commission of India, which "prohibits display of election matter through TV or similar apparatus." It is clarified that radio will be treated as "other similar apparatus" for this purpose and hence broadcasting/propagating any election matter through radio would not be permissible during the period of 48 hours mentioned in the said section, it said, reported PTI. Legal action would be initiated if the order is not followed during Lok Sabha elections 2024, the collector said. Meanwhile, poll authorities have asked candidates in Maharashtra's Latur Lok Sabha constituency to refrain from making inflammatory speeches and personal criticism against opponents during their campaign, reported PTI. Latur's general election observer Niranjan Kumar on Tuesday held a meeting with the candidates at the district collectorate and also appealed to them to follow the model code of conduct and cooperate with the authorities for the conduct of elections in a transparent and peaceful manner, reported PTI. Twenty eight candidates are in the fray for the Latur Lok Sabha seat election, to be held on May 7. Among the major political parties, the BJP has fielded sitting MP Sudhakar Shrangare, the Congress has given a ticket to Shivaji Kalge, and the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) has fielded Narsingrao Nivritti Udgirkar, reported PTI. During the meeting, Kumar said, "Candidates should not make inflammatory, provocative speeches during the campaign and refrain from personal criticism," reported PTI. It is mandatory for the candidates to mention the expenditure of every campaign in his/her election expenses register, he said. The Lok Sabha elections 2024 campaign should be carried out within the prescribed period only after obtaining prior permission from authorities, Kumar said, reported PTI. Latur collector and returning officer Varsha Thakur-Ghuge was present on the occasion. (With inputs from PTI)

He can't digest a common labourer becoming CM: Eknath Shinde slams Thackeray

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde hit back at Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray for his alleged 'neech' remarks, saying "they can't digest if a common labourer becomes the CM", reported news agency ANI. "Yesterday he (Uddhav Thackeray) said that Eknath Shinde is "neech". You abuse me by calling me "neech". If a farmer's son, a common labourer becomes the chief minister then you don't like it, you are unable to digest it," CM Eknath Shinde at an Lok Sabha elections 2024 rally in Buldhana. "If you look at it, this is not an insult to me, it is an insult to all the farmers' sons, it is an insult to the mothers and sisters of the poor and it is an insult to the society from which I come," he added. "I have faith that the people will respond to it through the ballot box on April 26," he asserted while appealing to people to vote for his party in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. On April 21, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, addressing the Vijay Sankalp Sabha in Nanded, Maharashtra, said that the people of the country are eager to make Modi ji the Prime Minister again. "Vote for one candidate means vote for Modi ji. The people of the country are eager to make Modi ji the Prime Minister. PM Modi's leadership is shining in the nation as the sun shines upon this earth. This is a matter of great pride for us. Modi ji has tried to bring not only Ram Temple but Ram Rajya in this country. INDIA bloc is asking the country that we have Rahul, Sonia, Stalin, Kejriwal, what do you have? On this, the people of the country reply that we have a "Modi guarantee". The synonym of trust is 'Modi Guarantee'," he said. Taking a dig at the Congress party, Shinde said that while PM Modi is working for the betterment of the country, Congress, on the other hand, is busy solving its internal issues, reported ANI. The Lok Sabha elections 2024 for the five parliamentary seats in Maharashtra were held in the first phase of polling on April 19. The state, with its 48 Lok Sabha seats, is the second-largest contributor to the lower house of Parliament after Uttar Pradesh. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 23 out of 25 contested seats, while the undivided Shiv Sena secured 18 out of 23 seats. The undivided NCP, part of the opposition alliance, contested 19 seats and won four in 2019 Lok Sabha election. Following the split in the Shiva Sena 2022, the Eknath Shinde faction aligned with the BJP.  (With inputs from ANI)

'Fatwas' being issued from mosques against BJP, claims party's Solapur candidate

Ram Satpute, the BJP's candidate from Solapur Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra, has alleged that "fatwas" were being issued from mosques in Solapur to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024, reported news agency PTI. Satpute, who is facing off against Congress' Praniti Shinde, the daughter of veteran leader Sushilkumar Shinde, made the claim while speaking to a Marathi news channel, reported PTI. "Fatwas are being issued from mosques in Solapur to defeat Modi ji. Maulavis are reaching out to voters asking them to defeat Modi ji," he said, reported PTI. Meanwhile, BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde on Tuesday claimed that like former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's "agenda" is that the minorities should have the first right to the country's wealth, and not tribals or Dalits, reported PTI. He was replying to a question about the manifesto of the NCP led by Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, a BJP ally, which mentions a caste-based census. Congress too has been demanding such a survey. "Caste-based census is not Rahul Gandhi's agenda. His agenda is what Manmohan Singh had stated earlier: minorities have the first right to the country's wealth," Tawde told reporters. BJP welcomed anyone for a debate on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks in this regard, Tawde added. "I am using the words minorities; he (Manmohan Singh) had said very clearly that Adivasis and Dalits would not get anything. And there is no comment on it by Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, (Mallikarjun) Kharge, which means they approve of it. Does it mean that (Maharashtra Congress president) Nana Patole and his allies Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray also want the same thing that Singh had said?" he asked. Asked about opposition's allegation that the BJP lowered the standard of the contest with the unopposed election in the Surat Lok Sabha constituency, Tawde said, "If a candidate files nomination papers with errors, it does not mean standards of the campaign were lowered. We had even requested that independent candidates withdraw their nominations before filing. How can such a request be termed as lowering the campaign standards?" The BJP candidate was declared winner in Surat after the nomination of his Congress rival was rejected as his proposers disowned their signatures on the form and all other candidates subsequently pulled out of the race. Tawde also alleged that Congress candidate from South Goa, Viriato Fernandes, had said that the country's Constitution should not be applicable to Goa. "A Congress leader in Karnataka also made a similar statement. It is a fact that the country's Constitution was amended 80 times during the Congress regime....prime minister Narendra Modi started the celebration of Constitution Day. Unfortunately, Rahul Gandhi is continuously trying to mislead people. When there is no other issue, Congress starts a conversation about Constitution changing," the BJP leader said. Oppn leaders target BJP as campaigning peaks for second phase of Lok Sabha polls

Campaigning has peaked for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 26 with opposition leaders from the INDIA bloc hitting out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over Prime Minister's "mangalsutra" remark, over the BJP's Surat MP winning unopposed with Congress leaders reiterating promise to conduct a caste census. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday said that her party is committed to conducting a caste survey if it is elected to power at the Centre and the Kadugolla community in Karnataka will be included among Scheduled Tribes (ST). Addressing a rally in Karnataka's Chitradurga, she said that Congress will pass a constitutional amendment to raise the 50 per cent cap on reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs. "For Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and OBC like my brother (Rahul Gandhi) says everywhere, a complete count will be done in the entire country as to who belongs to which caste and how much is their population and who is earning how much and then new policies will be made under that. The reservation limit will be increased from 50 per cent and the SC, ST sub-plan will be implemented. A special budget will be issued for SC, ST, and the Kadugolla community will be given ST status," she said. Later, at a public meeting in Bengaluru, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Tuesday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his "Mangalsutra" comments saying that the latter does not understand the struggles of women and her mother, Sonia Gandhi's mangalsutra was sacrificed for the country. "In the last two days, they are discussing that the Congress party wants to rob you of your mangal sutra, your gold. It has been 70 years since the country gained independence. The Congress has been in power for around 55 years. Has anyone taken off your gold, your mangal sutra? When we were at war, Indira Gandhi gave off her gold to the country. My mother's (Sonia Gandhi) mangalsutra was sacrificed for this country," Gandhi said speaking at a public meeting in Bengaluru. Addressing a public rally in Wayanad, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that Rahul Gandhi's leadership is not just limited to Wayanad but the entire country. "Rahul Gandhi's leadership is not only limited to Wayanad, he is the leader of the entire country. Today we stand at a crucial junction in our nation's history where the very soul of our country is under attack. Accounts of the Congress party have been frozen while the BJP has illegally collected Rs 13,000 crores in donations through the illegal electoral bonds..." Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Mangalsutra" remark, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav said that the trends coming out after the first phase of elections show that the BJP would be defeated. "This is a trend of defeat. The first phase of elections is over and now the trends have started coming. Using this language and talking like this weakens our democracy... The youth, farmers and businessmen have decided to vote out this government...," Yadav said. Later, on BJP Surat candidate Mukesh Dalal declared winner unopposed in the constituency, Akhilesh Yadav also said in a post on 'X' that the BJP has snatched away the right to vote. "The public has been insulted in Surat. They were not even allowed to cast their votes there. We have been saying from before that BJP will snatch away the right to vote. See, that is what has happened. This is also a murder of the Constitution because the people who have won through such rigging are not the elected representatives of the public. BJP is defying the Election Commission," Yadav said in a post on 'X'. "The Election Commission should at least take action for its own defamation. Like the Chandigarh mayor election, we once again appeal to the Supreme Court and the Election Commission to take suo motu cognizance of the Surat incident and cancel the election and give the harshest punishment to all the conspirators. The election process should be started afresh in Surat," he added. Speaking on BJP's 'unopposed' Lok Sabha win in Surat, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said, "One thing we have been saying repeatedly this is the work to finish off democracy; it is called Russian style of democracy...In Surat, the main candidate of the Congress party was rejected, then the substitute candidate was also rejected and all independent candidates withdrew the forms...This will be their democracy, without casting votes, BJP people get elected and PM Modi will keep the government.." Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that there was an alleged assassination attempt on TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. "One of the Gaddars (traitors) in the BJP said that a bomb will be exploded. If you have a grudge against me you can kill me by a bomb. You even tried to kill Abhishek but we came to know in advance. They even conducted a recce at his house, called him on Facetime and asked for an appointment. Had Abhishek given him time, he would have shot and fled. These people want to kill everyone or put them behind bars who speak against them. If you were confident that you would win with peoples' votes, then what was the need to terrorise people?" she said. On the other hand, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati asked people not to vote for either the BJP or the Congress-led INDIA bloc. "Like previous governments, under the present government of BJP, poverty, unemployment and inflation are increasing. Corruption is also not finished. Our borders are not fully secure. This is a matter of great concern. In the Lok Sabha elections, we need to make sure Congress, BJP and their ally parties don't come to power at the Centre...," she said in a public meeting at Meerut. The Lok Sabha polls are being held in India in seven phases, from April 19 to June 1 to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. While the first phase of the elections have concluded, the second phase of polling will be held on Friday. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. "PDP has joined BJP as its 'C' team": NC leader Omar Abdullah

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah claimed that Mehbooba Mufti-led People's Democratic Party (PDP) has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its 'C team'. Abdullah's statement comes after BJP leader Mushtaq Bukhari notably urged members of the Pahari community to vote for Mehbooba Mufti in the ongoing Lok Sabha election. Referring to this, the NC leader said, "If we have to defeat the BJP here, and the powers spreading poison in the whole country, then people should look at INDIA alliance leaders on all five seats of J-K. All others are connected to the BJP in some way. Be it the 'A' or 'B' team that meets Tarun Chugh sahib or PDP. I am assuming that now Mehbooba Mufti will put pressure on the BJP to get Mushtaq Bukhari's statement changed. PDP has joined BJP as its 'C' team." When asked about sitting BJP Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal who dropped as a candidate from the constituency in this election, Abdullah said that they will try to field such a candidate from the National Conference-Congress so that BJP has no chance of winning the seat. "The right candidate should be fielded by Congress (on the Ladakh seat) as we are fighting together on the Ladakh seat. We will try to field such a candidate from National Conference-Congress so that BJP has no chance of winning the seat," he said. BJP on Tuesday announced Tashi Gyalson, a former party general secretary of the Ladakh unit, as its candidate from the Ladakh constituency replacing its current MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal from the Lok Sabha seat. Tashi Gyalson is a councillor from the Lingshed constituency and in 2020 was elected as chairman and chief executive councillor of the 6th Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, (LAHDC), Leh. He joined the BJP after the BJP-PDP coalition government in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir collapsed. He was then a member of the PDP. Polling in Udhampur was held on April 19 (Phase 1), while Jammu, Anantnag-Rajouri, Srinagar, and Baramulla will poll on April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20 respectively. In 2019, polling for the Lok Sabha was held for six seats in Jammu and Kashmir. However, following the abrogation of Article 370, which resulted in the split of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state into two Union Territories--Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, there is no longer a separate Lok Sabha constituency for Ladakh. In the 2019 elections, the BJP won three seats while the National Conference won the remaining three. The counting of votes will be held on June 4. While Congress has filed Nilam Mishra against the BJP from the seat. "I want to talk about the Ladli Laxmi Yojana that has empowered women and would like to thank the Madhya Pradesh government for it more than 13 sisters are enrolled in higher education. You will be happy to know that more than one lakh panchayat is now connected to optical fiber," Nadda said. Nadda emphasized the accomplishments of the BJP in recent years, particularly in areas such as electricity provision and the 'Har Ghar Jal' initiative, highlighting the developmental strides made under the party's governance. "Earlier people used to walk three kilometres to bring water, today PM Modi has fulfilled the promise of 'Har ghar jal, har ghar nal, PM Modi also provided more than 4 crore houses under Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna and three core more houses will be built in next term," Nadda said. The voting schedule for the Rewa Lok Sabha seat is scheduled on April 26 in the second phase of Lok Sabha polls. Earlier in the day Nadda held a rally at Tikamgarh Lok Sabha Constituency of the state. Madhya Pradesh has a total of 29 Lok Sabha constituencies, making it the sixth-largest state in terms of members it sends to the Lower House. PM Modi accuses Congress of religious reservation plot

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Congress tried to extend reservation on the basis of religion and give it to Muslims, and once again accused the party of hatching a “deep conspiracy” to snatch people’s wealth and distribute it among “select” people. Launching a blistering attack on the Congress, Modi also charged that it is difficult to follow one’s faith under the Congress and that even listening to Hanuman Chalisa becomes crime under that party’s rule. His remarks come on a day when the country is celebrating Hanuman Jayanti. Addressing an election rally in Tonk, the prime minister said as soon as the Congress formed the government at the Centre in 2004, one of its first tasks was to reduce the SC/ST reservation in Andhra Pradesh and give it to Muslims. “Modi is giving you a guarantee with an open heart that reservation for Dalits and backward tribals will neither end nor will it be allowed to be divided in the name of religion,” he said. PM does not do politics on religion basis Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said PM Modi has never done politics on the basis of religion or by dividing the society and stressed that his predecessor Dr Manmohan Singh had in 2006 talked about extending reservation for the Muslims. Singh made the remarks at an election rally. PM Modi on Sunday suggested that if the Congress comes to power, it would redistribute wealth of people to Muslims and cited Dr Singh’s remark that minority community had the first claim on country’s resources. Cong to implement ‘Sharia law’ Yogi Adityanath made serious allegations against the Congress and said the grand old party has in its election manifesto expressed its intention to implement the ‘Sharia law’ in the country and redistribute people’s property. EC not acting on complaints against PM Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the party is exploring legal remedies as the EC is not acting on complaint against Modi for his ‘redistribution of wealth’ remarks. Shrinate said institutions like the EC need to have complete faith of people and they should work to restore that trust if it is shaken.
