Man asks 20-yr-old woman to be 'mistress', gets arrested
Accused had been stalking the woman for two months, and would often send text messages and make phone calls requesting her to meet him in private
The LT Marg police arrested a man on Friday for harassing and forcing a 20-year-old woman to be his ‘mistress’. The accused, Ismail Halai Memon (32) is married and runs a cosmetic business near Crawford market. On Saturday, Ismail alias Sohail was produced in court, after which he was granted bail.
According to the police, the girl, Nasreen Qureishi (name changed) lives near JJ Hospital and is a salesgirl in Selection Centre, a shopping mall near Jama Masjid. One morning two months ago, she received a text message from an unknown number saying, “kisi se na kahna (don’t tell anyone)” on her mobile phone. The same evening, she received another message from the same number saying, “tum Selection me job karti ho (you work at Selection).”
Text messages and calls came frequently after that. The caller identified himself as Sohail and offered to meet her in private, to which Qureishi refused.
Surprisingly, on November 19 she was unwell and was to visit a clinic and Sohail called and told her he knew she was going to the doctor because she was unwell. “I was surprised to hear that he had all information about me, including my personal matters. I was also wondering how he got my mobile number. I got fed-up with his constant calls and I told my parents,” Qureishi said.
On November 22, when Qureishi was leaving for work Sohail arrived on the spot and identified himself as “that caller and messenger.” He said his real name was Ismail, and that he was married, but wanted to keep her as his mistress. He said he would make her very happy. Qureishi informed her parents about the incident.
Qureishi’s father was allegedly sent from pillar to post by the police — first at JJ Marg, then at MRA Marg, Pydhonie and LT Marg police stations — to lodge a complaint. He claims that the police officials refused, saying that the matter was out of their jurisdiction. Finally, he met Deputy Commissioner of Police Nisar Tamboli, on whose instruction, an FIR was registered (copy available with MiD DAY) and Ismail was arrested. “We are very thankful to Tamboli saheb for intervening in the matter,” said Qureishi’s father.
“We have arrested Ismail under Sections 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 507 (Criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) of IPC,” said Avinash Sonavane, senior inspector, LT Marg police station.
