The deceased wounded the woman after she refused to elope with him; he then committed suicide by leaping in front of a running train between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli

The seeds of the fury unleashed Tuesday by Abhishek Digambar Vichare had been unwittingly sown nearly three years ago. In 2010, Abhishek met Priya Shinde at a tutorial in Ghatkopar. By the end of the year, the two 21-year-olds had grown closer and soon began a romantic relationship.

“They were having an affair since the beginning of 2011 and kept meeting in this neighbourhood,” said Inspector Rajkumar Kothmire from Ghatkopar police station. The couple informed their parents, who asked them to finish their education before thinking about marriage. “But after a while, Abhishek started acting jealous, and would cast aspersions at me and abuse me in public. If I spoke to a guy, he would suspect that I was having an affair. He constantly badgered and bullied me,” said Priya in her statement to the police.

Consequently, the woman’s parents strictly forbade her from meeting Abhishek. Kothmire added, “Abhishek, who was a student of engineering, started going to meet her outside her college, because of which her father began to pick up and drop her off. The two didn’t meet for three months, but when Priya’s father stopped going with her, Abhishek resumed harassing her.”

On Monday, the woman’s father saw Abhishek waiting near their building, because of which he allegedly punished his daughter. The BSc student called up her former boyfriend around 11am the next day and requested him not to trouble her. Angered by this, Abhishek allegedly entered the house and threatened her, saying, “If you don’t come with me, I’ll kill you.”

Kothmire said, “When Priya refused to go with him, Abhishek allegedly removed a knife from his pocket and attacked her. When the woman’s mother and sister intervened, he assaulted them too. Hearing the victims’ cries for help, the neighbours alerted the police.” All three women escaped with minor bruises.

He added, “Frightened, Abhishek fled from the spot. Later, a suicide report was filed and we came to know that he had jumped before a running train between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli.” The deceased was booked under sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of Indian Penal Code.
