New Delhi: A man today entered the reception area of North Block, housing Home and Finance ministries, and smashed a glass pane apparently to attract attention to his plight after he was bitten by a stray dog.

The incident was reported around 6 PM today and police suspected that the man, who posed as a visitor to enter the high-security area, suffered from mental illness, said a senior police officer. According to the police, the man walked in through the main entrance carrying an identity card and reached the reception, asking about a particular officer.

When the men at the reception informed him that they could not find the officer concerned, the man turned aggressive and smashed the glass pane on the table. He also threw a few chairs around. When security guards got hold of him and tried to escort him out, he insisted that he be allowed to make one last phone call.

When denied, he allegedly created a scene and sought urgent medical attention. The security personnel called up the police control room and reported the incident. When a PCR team reached the spot, the man told the policemen that he was bitten by a stray dog and needed to be taken to a doctor.

When the police took him to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, the doctors did find bite marks on his calves. The man is also been examined for any possible mental illness, said the senior officer. The man claimed to be a businessman from outer Delhi's Rohini but did not disclose any further details by which the police could inform his relatives.

He also told the police that he created the scene because he needed immediate medical attention, said the senior officer. He would be further interrogated, and a case might also be registered in this regard, once the doctors declare him fit for statement, the officer added.
