Man who threatened to rob RBI was being treated for mental illness since 2010

His relatives claim he is mentally ill and has been undergoing treatment since 2010. According to the Crime Branch, he has done his BCom and planned to target the RBI and flee with cash.

The police said Nayar had 1,000 pellets in his air gun and also carried an HCL Tab, and Rs 61,750 in cash when he tried to enter the RBI building on Tuesday afternoon. He was stopped by Ganpat Pharande, Bharat Wagh, Prakash Patil and Vitthal Kadam, all security guards of the apex bank. On being intercepted, Nayar fired one pellet that hit the tube light of the RBI.

The police investigations revealed that there is already a case under section 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) registered against Nayar in Kottayam, Kerala. “He worked at a lottery shop and managed to get Rs 3.5 lakh in cash after promising one person a winning ticket,” said a police officer.

After fleeing Kerala he informed his family he was going to Bangalore and then switched off his phone. He was staying at the New Shalimar Hotel in Grant Road since April 1. The Crime Branch took custody of Nayar from the MRA Marg police on Wednesday to find out if he has any terror links.

“He is being treated for his medical condition since 2010. His father died a long time ago. We lodged a missing persons’ complaint at Manimala police station when we couldn’t reach him,” said his uncle who did not wish to be named.
