Man's attempt to kill pup lands him in jail

Driven by a sadistic hatred for dogs, a 34-year-old man who worked in a stall in Padwal Nagar, Thane, attacked a sleeping eight-month-old pup in the area on Saturday with a boulder and landed in jail for unleashing the animal within.

Officials of the Shrinagar police station in Thane arrested Baswaraj Gowda after Yatin Pandey, a resident of the area filed a complaint in this regard. Pandey heard the dog howling and knew that it was being beaten.u00a0He followed its pitiful cries and discovered it lying bloodied and semiconscious with a large blood stained stone nearby.

He immediately informed animal lover and president of Sadbhavna Charitable Trust, Bhavanji Chhadwa, who rushed to the spot in an ambulance. The dog was admitted in the SPCA hospital in a critical condition. A doctor who is taking care of the animal said, “When the dog was brought in to the hospital, it was in semiconscious state. It was bleeding profusely from the nose and mouth, which indicates that it had sustained a severe blow to the head. The animal is still in a state of shock, but is out of danger.”

Cruel behaviour
According to Gowda’s statement to the police, the dog snapped at him when he stepped on it by mistake, which irked him enough to decide to kill it. Gowda said that he returned a while later with a large stone and pounded the dog’s head once with it when he found the animal asleep under a parked motorcycle in the area.

The dog was rendered immobile by the blow and Gowda was about to deal a second deadly blow when other locals began gathering upon hearing the injured dog howling in pain. The accused chose to flee from the spot rather than endure the wrath of the public. He was later traced and apprehended by the police.

The police have registered case against Gowda under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960 and Section 428 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) of the Indian Penal Code. “This is an extremely cruel and inhuman act. How can someone do such a thing to a puppy? He should be severely punished and we demand strict actions against such people,” Chhadwa said.u00a0
