After MiD DAY's report on crucial documents concerning slum rehabilitation on MIDC land having been misplaced, the authority has stirred into action and demanded a probe in the matter, prodded by Mantralaya functionaries.

MIDC land scam deepens with missing documents') about how papers proving the eligibility of nearly 3,960 slum dwellers seeking rehabilitation as part of the redevelopment of MIDC land in Andheri (East) by construction firm Ackruti City have been missing from the offices of the MIDC.

But according to sources within the government agency, senior authorities in the office have been asked to prepare a report on the issue as soon as possible.

It is on the basis of these documents that the eligibility of a dweller for a flat allotment in the rehabilitation building is decided. However, soon after the documents were prepared in 1999, officials lost track of their whereabouts. These are government records that can be made available to public via RTI.

After the report in MiD DAY, senior officials at Mantralaya called up officers at MIDC Andheri and asked them to submit a report on the matter to them in the next 10 days.

According to an MIDC officer, an urgent meeting of all officers, engineers and other executives was called by the most senior functionary at his office, where he informed everyone that they needed to produce the documents, and meanwhile, prepare a report on when, where and by whom the documents were misplaced.

A senior MIDC officer said, "We all are working extra hours to find the documents; they are of the utmost importance. The whole project stands on the basis of these. If they are lost, it is a matter of concern for every one of us.

"Our seniors have asked us to determine where things went wrong and what action should be initiated against the wrongdoers in the whole project. We are getting the details," said the officer.

K Shivaji, CEO, MIDC, confirmed that he has asked his officers to conduct an inquiry. "I have written to my subordinates that a proper inquiry be conducted in the issue, so wherever there are problems, they can be looked into," he said.
