Singapore: Maria Sharapova ended a three-month injury nightmare with a gruelling victory over Agnieszka Radwanska on the opening day of the WTA Finals in Singapore yesterday.

Sharapova, who has struggled with leg and forearm injuries since Wimbledon, battled for 13 minutes short of three hours to finish a first match since July.


The fifth-seeded Radwanska took out a 56-minute first set and, after dropping the second set, looked the likely winner when she had three break points for a 2-0 lead in the decider.


But the third-seeded Russian closed out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
