In a tragic incident around 2 pm yesterday at Dhankawadi crematorium, a mentally challenged man jumped onto a funeral pyre and lost his life

The man has been identified as Kerba Govind Chavhan (55), a local resident who was working in the water supply department of Pune Cantonment Board. The incident occurred while the last rites o one Mukund Pardeshi were being conducted by his relatives.

Katraj fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot after they got a call at 2.21 pm. Speaking to MiD DAY, fireman Ganesh Bhandare said, “By the time we reached, Chavhan was completely burnt. Normally, when people catch fire, they run. But, in this case, the man just jumped in and didn’t move at all. We took the body to Sassoon Hospital.”


According to Dhankawadi police station, a case of accidental death will be filed under section 174 of CrPC. Chavhan had 100 per cent burns, and after the police report will be filed after results of the post mortem are in. PSI MS Funde is investigating the case. u00a0
