Mercedes-Benz has finally introduced the 2017 E-Class LWB in the Indian market. While the petrol variant, the E 200 is priced at Rs 56.15 lakh, the fully-loaded diesel variant, the E 350 d is priced at Rs 69.47 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The new E-Class offers more than 200mm of extra wheelbase compared to the outgoing model. It will compete with the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, Volvo S90 and the Jaguar XF.

Let's compare the specifications of the new E-class with its primary rivals and see how it fares against them.

Dimensions

As the name suggests, the E-Class has been introduced in the long wheelbase version and hence, stands out of the competition in terms of overall length and wheelbase. The E-Class is 5063mm long and the S90 is its closest competitor in terms of length which is 100mm shorter. In terms of wheelbase, the 5 Series (2968mm) is its closest rival which falls behind by 111mm. The E-Class is also the tallest car here with a height of 1494mm. However, in terms of overall width, the 5 Series (2102mm) is the widest car here. While the XF(2091mm) stands second, the A6 (2086mm) stands third. The E-Class clearly appears to be more spacious than its rivals. Since the rear space on offer has been given more importance, it will appeal to those looking to be chauffeur driven.

Performance

While the 5 Series, A6, XF and the S90 have 2.0-litre diesel engines on offer, the new E-Class is only being offered with a 3.0-litre diesel engine. Only the 5 Series offers an optional 3.0-litre diesel engine which produces the same 258PS of power as the new E-Class. However, it produces 60Nm less torque as compared to the 620Nm on the E-Class. The engine on the new E-Class is much torquier, but we are yet to find out if it makes a significant difference in daily driving as we haven't driven both the cars back to back.

If you are the one who prefers a petrol engine, the S90 doesn't offer one. The other four cars have a 2.0-litre petrol engine under the hood on offer. With 240PS of power and 340Nm of torque, the XF appears to be the most fun-to-drive car as it has the most powerful petrol engine among the four and is followed by the A6 with 190PS/320Nm. While the petrol engines on the E-Class and the 5 Series produce the same 184PS of power, the torque on the E-Class (300Nm) is higher compared to the 5 Series (270Nm).

While the BMW 5 Series starts at Rs 50.5 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 62 lakh, the Audi A6 starts at Rs 45.90 lakh and goes up to Rs 53.70 lakh. As far as other rivals are concerned, the Jaguar XF is priced in the range of Rs 52.40 lakh - 66.30 lakh and the Volvo S90 is priced at Rs 53.5 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi). The E-Class is most expensive among the five but it does offer a spacious cabin and many features that are first in the segment to justify the price tag.
