50 merchants to go on hunger strike from today

The strike against implementation of Local Body Tax (LBT) being carried out by traders and merchants will gain momentum with 50 merchants going on a hunger strike from today.

A committee of Pune Merchant Association met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday and discussed the issue.After the meeting, Chavan ordered his secretary to send officials to Pune to get an idea about the problems faced by merchants in the city.u00a0



Taking a stand Shopkeepers and traders continued their protest against LBT by making a human chain at Laxmi Road


Officials will be visiting today and there a meeting will be held with a five-member-committee of Merchant Association. “We want a concrete decision on LBT in writing. Till then we will continue the strike.


Along with that, 50 merchants are going on a hunger strike from Thursday,” said Ajit Sethiya, one of the members of the Association’s committee that met Chavan. After the meeting, the officials will send a report to the chief minister. A final decision is expected on Friday.u00a0

Ever since the implementation of the LBT, many shops in the Peth areas are shut in protest of the tax. u00a0
