Phase-III to connect several historical monuments and heritage sites; information centres at specific stations and discounted tourist cards to woo visitors

Travel broadens your mind. Once Delhi Metro's phase-III becomes operational, this adage will be particularly apt for the Capital's favourite mass transit system. The new line is expected to boost tourism in the city and the outskirts, as it will connect several historical monuments and popular tourist hubs. Jama Masjid, Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb are names that come to mind.

Boost to tourism
"The completion of the third phase of Delhi Metro's construction is expected to boost the tourism sector in a major way as many heritage monuments will become connected by the Metro. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will provide information centres at specific stations on the line about the various historical sites and discounted tourist cards in various handy packages," said a spokesperson of DMRC.u00a0

While Jama Masjid and Red Fort will have dedicated stations on the Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor, the Hazrat Nizamuddin station on the Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar corridor will be near Humayun's Tomb. Elaborating on the advantages of the new line, a spokesperson said, "This is going to save the locals the trouble of taking poor transport options and foreigners from being duped by travel agents. Besides, it will save the commuters from traffic hurdles in crowded places like the Jama Masjid area," said a DMRC spokesperson."

What's on the cards
Metro tourist cards will be available in various packages. Commuters can avail the tourist cards in denominations of Rs 100 for unlimited travel for a day, Rs 250 for unlimited travel for three days. According to Metro officials, the cards will help make for an inexpensive journey and will be a good deal. Commuters only have to ask the customer service to fill them an additional tourist card value in their smart cards. "This will cost them Rs 50 payable at purchase, which will be refundable on return of the card. This is way cheaper and viable than the HoHo bus service run by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) where a ticket for wan adult costs Rs 300 and the service does not operate on specific weekdays," said the DMRC spokesperson.

Direct connectivity
Tourist attractions like Delhi Haat, which currently has a dedicated station at INA, will now have direct Metro connectivity with many areas along the Ring Road with the construction of the Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar corridor, which will have an interchange station at INA.

Other sites like the Lotus Temple will also have direct Metro connectivity from Noida and neighbouring areas with the construction of the Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden corridor which will have an interchange station at Kalkaji Metro station in close proximity to the temple.u00a0
