After nearly one year, city's iconic Kamla Nehru Park re-opened yesterday, after a complete makeover, which included extensive repairs to the damaged Old Woman's Shoe.

This Shoe is a much beloved feature of the Malabar Hill Park, which defines the garden; damaged by lightning years ago and closed off, its opening should bring joy to the kids. The Park, said a report in this paper yesterday, has been redone with an accent on children. The focus is good and the intentions noble; now, it is time to see that the Park is maintained properly. D ward (in which Malabar Hill stands) authorities need to see that the maintenance is top class and the makeover worth all the money and time that has been poured into it. Safety measures are a must. Ensure adequate security.

Disposal of rubbish should be done in waste bins inside or outside. Do not take a lax view on cleanliness. The children can climb into the Old Woman's Shoe; so, it must be cleaned from the inside and used for the purpose it has been made. There is a walking track for adults, but they must be discouraged from using play equipment meant for kids.

There is a park for mentally challenged children, just adjacent to Kamla Nehru Park, which was closed too. Now that this park too has opened along with the redone garden, it must be used specifically by those it seeks to benefit, the mentally challenged. We had instances when able kids were using the apparatus, rough housing with the equipment and spoiling it for mentally challenged kids. Adult caretakers must stop their able kids from using that park.

In the end, take pride in this garden and use it as if one has a stake in its upkeep and cleanliness. After all, responsible use shows respect for something badly needed in a city starved of green and open spaces.
