The HSC exam began yesterday, but the run-up to the exams was fraught with tension and worry for many. Several students who are appearing for the exam had not found writers till the last minute. Many visually challenged students were struggling to find writers and others with special needs had also crowded state board's Mumbai Division office in Vashi, seeking help for the same. Social media was buzzing with messages from visually challenged students seeking writers, even as the clock ticked on.
While students with special needs were wringing their hands in agony, there were also emergencies — a girl fractured her hand just a day prior to the exam and needed a writer at the last minute. All the problems highlighted in a front-page report in this paper point to the fact that it is time to get serious about making a concerted bank of writers.

Let the University go about this in a systematic way. One cannot have ad hoc choices at the last minute, because lower grade students are also preparing for their examinations during the time HSC exams come up and students need writers. A system has to be put in place, wherein a proper bank of writers is maintained. Form a working committee to set this up at once; if there are lacunae in previous attempts, plug those and put an efficient well-oiled bank of writers in place.
Exam time is a period of high stress for students, and the trials they face in these competitive times are certainly not trivial. With so much weighing on young minds, plus the challenge of being a special student, though they may overcome this with courage and grace, is certainly not a small one. Uncertainty about writers adds to the considerable anxiety pre-exam. Post this exam, a writers' bank needs to be addressed on priority and with a sense of urgency.
