mid-day editorial: We must not be trumped by hate

Reports are coming in about a spike in bigotry and hate crimes in the US after Donald Trump’s win. An international website cites racist graffiti appearing in the USA. At a New York engineering school, Trump’s name was written on a door to a Muslim prayer room. Immigrants are being increasingly told to go back to where they came from.

Yesterday, this paper had a front-page report about a Mumbai choreographer, a young woman living in New York City, who was targeted by a man on the road. After several sexual propositions and advances, the man told the woman that she better marry him otherwise Trump will send her back to her country.

One cannot use Trump as an excuse for racism. While his campaign rode on racism, controversy and discrimination, it cannot be used by the country to justify divisiveness and hate. Trump may or may not have his own reasons for his words, but you cannot justify your actions on that.

The US election may be an event beyond our borders, but the outcome affects us too. It is important to create an atmosphere of inclusiveness everywhere. This must begin in schools and educational institutions, where one’s formative years are spent. The message must be constantly reinforced and there has to be a complete shut down of any kind of slurs and justification of discrimination on any grounds. Most importantly though, what this teaches us is that you cannot constantly blame somebody else for your actions. Your bigotry is yours alone. To claim to be swayed by Trump or anybody else is a cowardly excuse.

Use the social media to bring sanity and a sense of justice and fair play. As pro and anti-Trump protestors attack each other, stay out of the cauldron and instead weigh actions and words carefully. Let us prove we are above being trumped by hate.
