Rege on Prithvi Shaw's exclusion from India U-19 squad: It's a perfect move

The BCCI's junior selection committee led by former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad yesterday decided to leave teenage bating sensation Prithvi Shaw out of the U-19 Asia Cup squad scheduled to be held in Malaysia next month for an extended run in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. Shaw had led the India U-19 one-day side during the series win on the England tour in August. The attacking batsman, 17, who scored a century on debut in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Tamil Nadu early this year, will play against the same opponents in his opening Ranji Trophy game this season on October 24 at the MCA-BKC ground in Mumbai. Former Mumbai chief selector Milind Rege, whose committee picked Prithvi in Mumbai's senior team last year, welcomed the latest move.

'Prithvi's got bright future'
"It's a perfect decision. In every country, first-class cricket is most important. U-19 Asia Cup is not such a big tournament. Prithvi, who has a bright future, will get huge experience while playing in first-class cricket," Rege told mid-day yesterday. It is learnt that the decision to keep Prithvi out of the U-19 squad was taken in consultation with India 'A' and U-19 coach Rahul Dravid. "I am glad Rahul Dravid has insisted that first-class cricket is much more important than all these matches," Rege added. However, the former Mumbai skipper came down heavily on BCCI for allowing Mumbai's top cricketers to play warm-up matches against the visiting New Zealand team.

'Ridiculous decision'
"The decision to allow Shreyas Iyer, Dhawal Kulkarni and Shardul Thakur to play matches against New Zealand is ridiculous. There is absolutely no need to play in tomorrow's friendly games. Instead, they should concentrate on first-class cricket which is more important than all these matches. These games are not even recorded in a player's history.

"BCCI has got it completely wrong. How is the BCCI organising such matches when your domestic competition is on? How can you stop your players from playing first-class Ranji Trophy cricket? Can you imagine a player playing a practice match against India when they have to play Sheffield Shield or an English county match?" Rege questioned.

Rege, 68, who played 52 first-class matches, felt BCCI is not giving adequate importance to the first-class cricket. He said: "I can understand if they are playing in some tournament or for India 'A', but for friendly matches it is a completely wrong policy.

"You are depriving your cricketers of good first-class cricket. You are not giving adequate importance to first-class cricket. Why should you give your best players to play a practice game against a visiting team?"
