Mira-Bhayandar poll results reveal Congress is biggest loser

The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation poll results announced yesterday came as a severe jolt to Congress, as the party emerged as the biggest loser. The NCP was in for a shock as well, as BJP emerged the single largest party and may install a mayor of its choice.u00a0

The results are particularly important, as they have come soon after Saturday’s riot at Azad Maidan. Mira-Bhayandar had gone for polls on Sunday and the results reveal that BJP has won 29 seats, Shiv Sena 14, NCP 27, Congress 19, Vikas Aghadi 3 and MNS and independents one each.

Though the NCP and Congress have bagged a larger seat share of 47 as compared to the BJP-Sena combine, the Congress local unit is vehemently against the NCP.

According to sources, relations between both parties have faced several problems in the past and the field is considered to be wide open for the saffron alliance. A party leader from the BJP said that BJP-Sena can expect support from the lone MNS member as well as the single independent member, and that the results have come as a big boost for the party.

Party spokesman Madhav Bhandari said the results are a fallout of pubic outrage over the Pune blasts, attacks against north-east students in Pune, the riots in Assam and to top it all, Saturday’s riot in Mumbai. The Congress-NCP government has failed to handle the mayhem, in which rioters assaulted policemen and media persons.

When Congress spokesman Sachin Sawant was asked about the party’s performance, he said the party was assessing results of the Mira-Bhayandar poll outcome. He however refused to comment when asked whether it was the fallout of Saturday’s riot.

Role reversal
In the last elections, the Congress had 33 corporators and NCP 20, whereas the BJP had just nine seats and Sena had four. The MNS has lost three seats as the party had four corporators.

Meanwhile, political parties have swung into action after the riot as Congress is on a salvaging mission and BJP-Shiv Sena is trying to cash in on the public outrage.

While the Samajwadi Party raised a few questions over the arrest of 23 accused even when the inquiry was on, a delegation comprising Aman Committee, Ulema Council, Muslim Personal Law Board and Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi met CM Prithiviraj Chavan to discuss issues related to incident.u00a0
