Missing Jai: Forest department arrest two people who set snares, wires

There seems to be some breakthrough in the search operation of the missing Tiger Jai as the forest department has arrested two people from Bhandara district who used to set wire and snares to catch small mammals and birds in the forest. The FD is interrogating both the accused to know if they have spotted a tiger with a collar. The FD officials have also made it clear that the news that Jai has been killed is a rumour.

It should be noted that in the past two shepherds from Bhandara area had claimed of seeing a tiger with a collar in the same district.

While the authorities have made it clear that the news of poaching that had went viral on whatsapp about Jai’s poaching is a rumor, the point to worry is the fact that on Wednesday the forest department authorities attached to the Bhandara Forest Division have arrested two alleged poachers who used to set wire snares to catch small wild animals. According to the officials who did not wished to be named this is also the same district where the locals claimed to have spotted a Tiger with collar.

Deputy Conservator of Forest (DCF) Bhandara, Umesh Verma alleged “ One Madhukar Murlidhar Hatwar and Kisan Istari Samart of Kodurli in Pawani Range have been arrested on Wednesday under the Section 9 , 50 and 51 of the Wildlife (protection) Act 1972. During our search operation that was conducted at their house, we have recovered wires and snares which they were allegedly using to catch small mammals and birds. We are investigating the matter and as of now they are not related to any tiger offence."

On Wednesday morning there were few messages that had gone viral on the whatsapp which stated that Jai was killed by poachers but later it was found that it is nothing but a rumor.

In the month of July the Forest Mknister Sudhir Mungantiwar had also said that Jai-the tiger which ad gone missing after its radio collared stopped working on April 18. Later a huge search operation was launched by various NGOs and FD to search Jai-which is also believed to be one of the biggest Tiger of central India.

Honorary Wildlife Warden of Nagpur Roheet Karoo said, "Our search operation to find the whereabouts of the missing Tiger Jai is in progress and we are taking the best possible efforts to locate him. On Wednesday the FD officials have arrested two people from Pauni area with wires and snares but it has nothing to do with Jai."
