A day after this paper reported about the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation's (MSRDC) plan to build an F1 racing track while potholes reign supreme on its roads and its previous projects remain unfinished, the body has pulled down the tender document seeking bids for the same from its website.
In our cover story published on Monday ('MSRDC can't fix roads, but F1 plans on track'), it was brought to the notice of people how the MSRDC, formed with the intention of constructing good quality roads and highways, wants to construct a Formula 1 track in Panvel and had invited bids for the same. After the article was published, certain public representatives had even raised questions over the working style of the corporation. Critics within the body had even said that rather than a Formula 1 circuit, MSRDC should concentrate on fixing roads and flyovers that fall under its jurisdiction.
Following the strong criticism of its ambitions, MSRDC has pealed off the tender advertisement regarding the construction of the circuit from its website.
Whether one should construe the removal to mean that MSRDC is rethinking its plan to the track is not entirely for officials reserved any response to queries related to the matter.u00a0
In the last week of September MSRDC had invited tenders from interested bidders to develop the F1 racing track in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and it will be the responsibility of the bidder to search a piece of land admeasuring around Rs 300-350 crore.
A highly placed source in the corporation said, "A number of officers in the corporation are of the opinion that MSRDC should focus on projects like developing roads, highways and flyovers, instead of those which have little to do with the objective with which the body was set up."
