Pramod Mane (25), a resident of Ramabai Nagar who was riding a black Pulsar, died on the spot, while pillion rider Anoop Pawar (30) sustained injuries. An unconscious Pawar was rushed to nearby Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar (E).

Although it is not known at what speed the youths were riding the bike, a large chunk of the divider broke under the impact of the crash.

"The accident happened around 1.40 am on Wednesday," said an official from Pant Nagar police station, Ghatkopar. "A punchnama is being carried out. We cannot say if the rider was drunk or not. Pawar is undergoing a medical test as well."

Another official said often during festivals, like Dussehra, revellers tend to 'let loose', indicating that the youths could have been drunk and riding rashly.

"An exceptionally high number of road accidents was reported on Tuesday night," said a doctor at the trauma centre of Rajawadi Hospital last night. "I alone attended to three such cases."
