Accused wanted to bag contract with Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation

A contractor and a clerk working with the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Thane, for allegedly trying to bribe a BJP MLA. Both have been remanded in police custody till July 11.

The alleged accused have been identified as Radheshyam Khaturia, a contractor with Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation and Anand Gabale, 38, who works as a clerk with the corporation.

Narendra Mehta, the BJP MLA of Bhayandar, said in his statement to the police that Khaturia had filled up a tender to bag the contract of providing services to the bus drivers working for the corporation. "Although the tender came out in Khaturia's favour, five BJP corporators opposed the decision. Since the corporation is ruled by the BJP, bagging the tender again was difficult. So, he decided to offer a bribe to the complainant who then informed the ACB," said a senior official from the department.

A case has been registered at the Navghar police station in Mira Road under the Prevention of Anti-Corruption Act, 1988. "The clerk was caught red-handed when he brought cash to hand over to Mehta on Khaturia's behalf," said Anil Honare, police inspector, Anti-Corruption Bureau.
