Last week, a former Doordarshan anchor and yoga teacher was knocked down by a coconut tree that fell straight on her head while she was on a morning walk in Chembur. She later succumbed to her injuries. Her husband has blamed the BMC for not permitting the tree to be cut. The incident took place at 8 am on Thursday, when Kanchan Nath (58) was walking near her home. As she walked past Chandroday Society, a coconut tree there came crashing down on her head, knocking her down on the road. Passers-by pulled her out from under the tree and rushed her to hospital. The entire incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed at a nearby shop.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, the tree which fell on the school was recently pruned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). All these incidents have put the BMC’s tree pruning exercise under the scanner.
According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), it had pruned 60,000 trees in the city ahead of monsoon.
