After enraging green activists, the Rs 12,000-crore Coastal Road project is raising a stink and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Accumulated water, possibly from sewage pipes, has formed a dirty pool at the construction site near Amarsons Garden, Breach Candy and residents going for morning and evening walks have had to face the brunt.

Residents claim that water being let out into the sea via sewage lines is getting stuck due to reclamation work. Chief engineer of Coastal Road department, Vijay Nigot, said, "The issue is not because of the Coastal Road work." He claimed that the problem comes under the purview of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Sewerage Operation Department.

A resident who regularly walks at Amarsons Gardens, said on condition of anonymity, "We have been facing this problem for a month. We have complained to the BMC several times. Walks have become unpleasant due to the stench and the problem of mosquitoes has gotten worse. The nuisance must be dealt with soon."

Activist Zoru Bhathena took to Twitter to complain against the pool. "Sewage water being discharged thru the SWD's, has stagnated at Coastal Rd site outside Amarsons Gardens, Breach Candy in D Ward. It is smelling very bad & is very unhygienic. Kindly fix the drain lines, so water does not accumulate here," (sic) his tweet read.

BMC's SWD (Storm Water Drain) department replied stating, "We regret your inconvenience. We have requested the concerned authority to attend this at the earliest." (sic)

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of D ward, Prashant Gaikwad, Sewerage Operations department's Chief Engineer, Ashok Yamgar and Storm Water Drain Chief Engineer Sanjay Jadhav were not available for comment.
