The Guggenheim Lab tries to analyse the relationship that women share with Mumbai

Mumbai and the fairer sex

Mumbai has plenty of spaces meant exclusively for men from restrooms, beer bars to clubs, but the same can’t be said about the fairer sex. Let alone clubs and socialising spots, the city is even struggling to provide necessary restrooms or spaces for women. A panel of social activists will take on the issue and try to find out, how and what type of social spaces does the city need to make it comfortable for women at the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum on Saturday, as part of the BMW Guggenheim Lab.

Mumbai needs more social spaces for women

The session, titled Women and Social Spaces, will look at the relationship that women have with Mumbai. “It will revolve around how spaces can be created that can affect women’s notions of comfort and safety? What would these spaces look like? And would these alter the overall relationship that women have with the city,” says Aaron Pereira, program consultant, BMW Guggenheim Lab.

A DIY experiment
The session will start with a panel discussion that includes social researcher Zainab Bawa, social activists Hemangini Gupta and Sohini Chakraborty and photographer Gauri Gill. While the discussion will attempt to find answers for a few hard-hitting questions related to women spaces, the highlight is a DIY experiment that aims to give the participants a sense of what it might be like to have more uniquely female spaces, adds Pereira.
