Mumbai: Bag snatcher is a garment trader with properties in Delhi, Bihar too
Crime Branch revealed 43-year-old Mira Rd resident operated with brother, nephew; ran a garment business and rented out properties for high rents
The crime branch police, who caught a bag snatcher recently, were stunned to learn that the man is a rich garment trader who owns several flats in Mira Road, Nalasopara, New Delhi and in his hometown, Bihar. The police have identified the man as Mohammed Jasim Jainul Shaikh, 43, a resident of Beverly Park, Mira Road (East). Shaikh, who operated with his brother, Nasim Jainul Shaikh, 45, and a nephew Atikullah Shaikh alias Guddu, would target bank customers withdrawing large amounts. Shaikh was arrested following a police complaint filed by Rameshkumar Sharma, a peon at Western Paper Material, who was robbed by two bikers on November 15 while he was heading to his office after withdrawing Rs 8.5 lakh in cash from Union Bank at Masjid.

After the Pydhonie police lodged an FIR, the crime branch unit-2 launched a parallel hunt for the accused. Acting on reliable information, Shaikh was arrested last week. During the probe, cops learnt that Shaikh used to operate along with his brother and nephew, who are absconding. The nephew used to visit banks and would tip off Shaikh about people withdrawing large amounts of cash. Shaikh and his brother would then target the person on their bike. Shaikh had been using this modus operandi for more than three years.
The police suspect that all the properties Shaikh owns have been bought with the earning from his crimes. His family has given out these properties on high rents. Shaikh, however, claims that all the properties have been bought from the earnings of his garment business. But, he had no answers when interrogators asked him why he needed to commit robberies when he earned so much from his garment business. The police are not buying his claims and are trying to recover the maximum amount from him and are also in the process of collecting evidence in order to build a watertight case against him. Shaikh has been handed over to the Pydhonie police.
