The first three of the 37 made-to-order Tejaswini buses for women have finally arrived in Mumbai and will be put in service in the next ten days. The buses are required to be registered and processed after which they can be inducted in the fleet. The BEST Undertaking has proposed to procure and run these buses under the Maharshtra government's Tejaswini scheme.
Confirming the development, BEST spokesperson Manoj Varade told mid-day that three buses have arrived so far, and more are on the way. "It could take around 10 days to induct them in the fleet for passenger service. A total of 37 buses have been planned," said Varade.

The Maharashtra government has formulated the Tejaswini scheme to ease the difficulties faced on public transport, by plying women commuters during their journey in major cities. Under the scheme, it has plans to distribute 300 new buses to various cities, including Mumbai, spending Rs 90 crores.
Under the original scheme, 30 buses have been planned to be procured by the BEST at a cost of Rs 11 crore, but with additional available funds, the BEST is now procuring 37 buses. These non-AC, buses will be run exclusively for women once procured.
