The Powai police has busted a con involving a network of racketeers who extracted Rs 5.25 lakh from a builder on the pretext of providing private mobile numbers. The crime came to light after an Uber driver was arrested in the case.

According to the police, in August, a Powai-based builder received a text message asking if he wanted a private mobile number. The builder gave a positive reply to the sender and numerous messages were exchanged between the two. Finally, the two struck a deal of Rs 5.25 lakh for four SIM cards. However, after depositing the money in the account, the builder realised that he received ordinary SIM cards. He registered a complaint with the police.

The police traced the details of the person whose bank account had been used to deposit the money. Investigations revealed that the account was registered with one Ravi Yadav, who worked as a driver for Uber.

During interrogation, it was revealed that Yadav had given his account details to friends, who shared 20 per cent commission for each transaction. “There are around three to four persons involved. We are trying to nab them,” the officer added.
