It is learnt that Mantri, the maternal uncle of batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, was hospitalised earlier this month and succumbed to a heart attack on Friday morning.

He played only four Tests but his contribution to Indian cricket was massive. His service to the game started many decades before he became president of the Mumbai Cricket Association in the 1980s.

He was probably Mumbai's shrewdest captain and his disciplined leadership at Dadar Union helped inspire a generation of players including nephew Gavaskar, who was bowled over by Mantri's India colours each time he visited his uncle's Hindu Colony, Dadar dwelling.

Mantri was manager of the Indian team's 1990 tour of England and was of great help to young Sachin Tendulkar.
