A 25-year-old IIT student lost Rs 27,000 in a Unified Payments Interface fraud after she sought a refund for bad pizza and called up the customer care number of a food delivery platform.

Seecha Vajpayee was dissatisfied with the quality of the pizza and she looked up for the customer care number online. The call did not go through, but she got a call back and did as the person advised, following which three transactions on UPI took away Rs 27000. The Powai police probed the case which was registered on November 3 and found that the customer car number had been hacked by the fraudster and replaced by one which used to dupe people.

Vajpayee had ordered a pizza on October 27 at her IIT Powai quarters at around 8pm. A report in The Times of India quoted a Powai police officer saying, "Unhappy with the quality, Vajpayee mailed a complaint to the online platform’s complaint box. When there was no response, she decided to call the customer care number. Vajpayee lost the money after the fraudster asked her to fill a link with personal details for the refund. Soon after she replied, three fraudulent transactions were carried out from her account."

Vajpayee had looked up the number on Google to call customer care. In the complaint, she said that when she called the number, there was no response. She said, “A few minutes later, I got a call from another number and the person said he is from the online food service customer care centre. He agreed to refund the money and asked me to click on the link he is sending. I entered my mobile number and the amount to refund along with the UPI PIN. Within no time, three transactions were done. When I tried to call the same number, it was switched off."

A police officer explained the modus operandi and said the fraudster told the girl that he is sending a code which she will have to scan to get the refund process initiated. The victim was unaware that the code sent to her was the pay request to get money debited from her account. A case was registered under IPC section 420(cheating) and under the IT Act sections 66(C)(identity theft) and 66 (D)(cheating by personation) against unidentified persons.
