A 65 year-old man was arrested by the Vakola police for molesting his late best friend’s minor daughter. The incident took place at the residence of the accused, near Takdir Hotel in Kalina on Friday night.
Officials said Johny Fernandez and the victim’s father were best friends until the latter and his wife passed away in the year 2000. The girl has been in Kolkata for further studies since 2005 and had recently come to Kalina to meet her aunt, who has been her guardian after her parents’ death.

Father figure
The victim went to meet Fernandez at his residence on Friday night. Since she considered the accused a father-figure, the girl did not hesitate when Fernandez asked her to wait in the bedroom till the time he got her some food to eat.
But the moment she took the first bite, Fernandez pounced on her. When the girl resisted, he assaulted her. Fernandez thrashed the victim so badly that she collapsed on the floor. Officials said the girl somehow managed to flee the spot.
She went to Kalina and informed her aunt about the incident, following which she lodged an FIR against Fernandez. The girl was supposed to leave for Kolkata, where she works part-time besides pursuing her education, on Saturday.
Fernandez was in an inebriated state at the time of incident and was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 354-A, 324, and various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He was produced in court and was remanded in judicial custody.
