The police booked an unidentified person on Sunday after a 75-year-old widow was allegedly strangled to death in Versova, Andheri. The deceased Narayan Shetty, who is survived by her daughter, Manorama Shetty, was found dead at home by her relatives, a report in Hindustan Times read.

Shetty was living in a building that housed Chaitanya Hotel in Versova. Manorama said her mother owned two shops and a room, which were rented out.

Sujata Shetty was quoted in the report saying, "Around 4pm, my husband knocked on her door, but no one responded and he left. Later, around 8pm, I went with another relative, Ramni, and we too knocked the door, but did not get any response." She said they found the door was open and decided to check inside. The report said Sujata and Ramni found Shetty's body in the washroom and informed the police. "Her legs, hands, throat and face were tied with a yellow sari," Sujata said.

Senior inspector of DN Nagar police station, Parmeshwar Ganme said they suspect Shetty was strangled. They have filed an FIR against unidentified persons under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and are investigating the case.

Police said Shetty's home was vandalised and it is unclear if anything was taken. They are checking CCTV footage , and the building is located opposite Versova police station. Manorama said the police informed her about the incident around 8pm, and her son Dhiran Shetty, 29, had been detained for questioning on Sunday night.

According to Manorama, Shetty was seen alive around 1.30pm on Sunday afternoon by her tenants."There are three tenants on the first floor of the building. The tenants generally go in the morning and return after 8pm. They saw my mother at 1.30pm," she was quoted as saying in the report.

In 1997, Shetty's husband, Narayan, was stabbed to death after his involvement in a property deal. At the time, Manorama, who was with him, said his assailants tried to attack her, too, but she was saved. The police said further investigations are on.
