The 27-year-old labourer was drunk when he saw the survivor's door ajar; he entered the house, raped the sleeping woman and fled, only to be found asleep on a footpath by the police
Mumbai sex crime
In a case that challenges all established wisdom on rape, a 90-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in her sleep by a 27-year-old labourer, who is a friend of her grandson.
According to the Tilak Nagar police, the accused, Prabhu Nadar, had been drinking with his friends in Ghatkopar on the night of October 8.

He had consumed a lot of alcohol — so much so that his phone and wallet had been robbed.
Nadar was on his way home after drinking when he passed the survivor’s house. The survivor had gone to sleep after having dinner that night and had mistakenly left her door ajar.
“Nadar had consumed a lot of alcohol. He saw that the survivor’s door was ajar and entered the house,” said senior police inspector Bhagwat Sonawane from Tilak Nagar police station.
In her statement to the police, the 90-year-old survivor said she sensed someone tying up her hands and legs in her sleep. By the time she woke up, Nadar had stuffed a cloth into her mouth.
“After she was raped, the survivor lost consciousness. When she gained consciousness, she used her mouth to untie herself and informed her son, who stays in the house next to hers. The family then came to our police station and, after registering the case, the 90-year-old was admitted to Sion hospital,” added Sonawane.
The accused, meanwhile, had fled the house but he was so drunk that he didn’t make it very far.
The police found him sleeping on a footpath in Amar Nagar, which is on the way to his house, and arrested him.
Nadar has been booked under Sections 376 (rape), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) and 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrong) of the Indian Penal Code. He has been remanded in police custody.
