A rickshaw driver from Malad has been arrested for luring a minor with the promise of marriage and raping her. The 15-year-old girl’s mother who is undergoing treatment for paralysis, used to be transported to and from a hospital by him in his rickshaw. The girl would accompany her and the driver befriended her.

The Kurar police registered the case in the month of May on the girl’s mother’s complaint but arrested the accused on Thursday, as his identity was not disclosed to them by the survivor.

The arrested accused has been identified as Rahil Shaikh (34) a resident of Kurar. According to police sources the survivor is a Std X student, and stays along with her parents, at Malad east. Her mother suffered a paralytic attack last year.

Police said the auto driver and the survivor become friends. He made false promises of marriage to her, and maintained sexual relations with her. In the month of May, the girl complained to her mother about pain in her abdomen. Her mother took her to a doctor and was shocked when she was told that her daughter was pregnant. According to the police, in the beginning the girl told them a false story that she had sexual relations with a schoolmate, when she used to go to his home for studies.

Police says
“We have arrested the accused under section 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC and various sections of POCSO act, and he has been remanded in police custody,” said a police official.

He further said, “The school was closed due to summer vacation due to which we did not start investigation. After the school reopened, the investigation began and during enquiry it was revealed that no such boy, of the name given by the minor, was in the school. The girl was questioned again on June 30 then she gave the name of the auto driver.”
