A Charkop resident lost Rs 25,000 to cybercrime after money was withdrawn twice through her debit card, the second time being after she informed the bank about the first unauthorised transaction.
According to police, Rashmi Savardekar, 58, a resident of Bhabrekar Nagar in Charkop went shopping with her daughter at Inorbit Mall in Malad, on February 1. As per Savardekar's statement to the police, she paid for a couple of dresses at a clothes store with her debit card. Later in the evening, she received messages on her mobile phone about cash withdrawals from her bank account. She searched for her debit card but could not find it anywhere.

Realising that she has lost the debit card, Savardekar visited Bangur Nagar police station the next day and submitted a complaint. On February 3, she went to Dena Bank's Prabhadevi branch and submitted a written complaint to a bank officer, who filled a dispute form and assured her that the amount would be returned to her account soon.
However, on February 13, Savardekar got another alert about the withdrawal of R1,000 using the same debit card. She questioned her bank about the withdrawal from a blocked card and was advised to approach the police.
The Bangur Nagar police then registered an FIR under Sections 406 (breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
"It is possible that someone found the card or stole it. We are checking the CCTV footage at the mall and trying to trace the location from where the money was withdrawn with the help of the bank," said an officer from Bangur Nagar police.
"It is not possible for someone to find an ATM card and withdraw cash. I will have to check when and to whom the complaint was made," said Dinesh Sharma, branch manager of Dena Bank's Prabhadevi branch. When asked about the withdrawal from the blocked card, Sharma said it does not usually happen and that he will have to check on the matter.
