The Mira Road police have arrested a couple for the murder of the woman whose body was found in an iron trunk at Naya Nagar on Sunday. The police say the couple killed the 68-year-old woman as they had borrowed Rs 2,000 and couldn’t return it when she asked for it.
The victim has been identified as Indira Manohar Remje, who lived with her son at Sariput Nagar in Andheri East. The couple, who were the deceased’s neighbours, are Vineet Mistri and his wife Maya, a carpenter a housewife respectively.
Police say the couple took the loan from Remje for an eye operation for their four-year-old son last month, but didn’t return it. During Ganesh Chaturthi, she asked the duo again to return her money as soon as possible, and they had a fight.
A police official said, “The couple entered Remje’s home early on Sunday morning, when she was alone at home, and strangulated her. Later, they dumped her body in an iron trunk and left it at Naya Nagar at Mira Road east.
They also stole 19 gram of gold ornaments from her house and sold them to some jewellers at Mira road.” Police identified Remje after a missing person’s complaint was filed by her son Vijay at MIDC police station.
