Mumbai crime: Customs seize more than Rs 2 cr worth gold in one day

Officers of Mumbai Customs' Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) have confiscated gold worth over Rs 2 crore on Monday.


The officers recovered close to 14 kgs of gold throughout the day.


In the first case, AIU officers, on night shift, arrested two individuals -- -- Elshazly Ahmed Mahmoud Mohamed Sherif and AMR Mohamed Shaheireldin Ibrahim -- with Egyptian passports with gold worth over Rs 1 crore on Monday evening,


The officers intercepted the duo after they arrived in Mumbai from Dubai on Emirates flight EK 500 with 4 and a half kilograms of the yellow metal valued at Rs.1, 11, 96, 922.

In the second case, a passenger -- Mubeen Ahmed Attar -- arriving in the city from Bahrain by Gulf Air flight GF 056 was intercepted with 4 gold bars of 10 tolas each totally weighing 466.6 gram valued at Rs 11,60,906.

In the third case, the officers arrested Arshi Mohd Miyariwala coming from Muscat by Oman Air flight WY 201 with 4 crude bangles and one crude chain totally weighing 500 gram valued at approximately Rs.12, 44,102.

The AIU officers, on the day shift, arrested three people involved in gold smuggling.

In the first case, Ajay Kumar Puthiyaveetil, who had arrived from Abu Dabhi by Air India flight AI 944, was held with three gold bars of 10 tolas each totally weighing 349.8 grams and valued at Rs.8, 70,374. In the second case, the authorities seized a round plate and 8 wire rods of gold concealed in LED light and umbrella weighing approximately 280 grams and valued at Rs.6, 96,697 from Tallikal Harees who had arrived from Abu Dabhi by Air India flight AI 944.

In another instance, the authorities found two unclaimed gold bars of 1 kg each totally valued at Rs.49, 76,410 from a dustbin placed bay no. 78 at the international airport. A vigilant CISF staff who spotted the yellow metal informed the customs department.

The officeras also seized 10 gold bars of 10 tolas each and 1 gold bar of 50gms totally weighing 1216 grams and valued at Rs.30.2 lakhs from Nasir Mahmood Machiwalla, who had arrived from Riyadh by flight AI 920.
