Mumbai crime: Gang of 'scribes' busted for extorting hoteliers

Officials from the Khar police station busted a gang of imposters who used to extort money from restaurateurs in the western suburbs by posing as journalists from ‘Samay News 24’ channel, which they had fabricated.

Inspector Sukhlal Varpe from Khar police station said, “We have arrested Ajay Gupta (36), Abhishek Dorwani (30), Aslam Qazi (36), Satish Naidu (24), and the gang leader Gaurav Singh (27).

The gang had earlier extorted Rs 12,000 from Sushant Bhosle, owner of Gopal Krishna hotel in Khar (West). They were nabbed red-handed at 1 am on Wednesday when they again visited Bhosle with the intention of taking money from him.

We recovered fake identity cards from their possession.” He added that a lot of people are a part of the gang, including women, for whom a manhunt has been launched. “It was the women who would visit police stations and inform about alleged wrongdoings of the hoteliers, and compel the officials to conduct raids.

Later, they would extort money from these businessmen. More arrests are likely to be made in the future,” Vapre said. The accused have been booked for extortion and have been remanded in police custody.
