Mumbai Crime: Live-in partner detained for strangulating girlfriend

A 34-year-old man was detained by the police yesterday after his live-in partner was found dead in his house on Monday evening. The woman, Anu Sharma, had been living with the suspect, Manjit Keshav, in Madh Island for one-and-a-half years.

Cops suspect that the victim had found out that Keshav was married and had fought with him. According to the police, they received a call from Sharma’s neighbour and friend Sunita Prajapati on Monday.

They reached Raju Apartment in Madh Island and found the victim’s body lying in the bedroom. Sharma was working as a hairstylist in the film industry. Prajapati told the police that Sharma had been staying with Keshav, who is a small-time model, and the house was rented in his name. The trio were good friends and would have meals together from time to time.

On Sunday, the couple had dinner at Prajapati’s house and went back to their apartment. On Monday afternoon, when Sharma did not turn up for lunch, her worried neighbour went to her apartment to check up on her. “Finding the main door ajar, Prajapati went inside and found Sharma lying in the bedroom. She tried to wake Sharma up, but realised that she was dead,” said an officer from Malwani police station.

There was no sign of a break-in or any evidence to suggest that an attempt had been made to rob the place. Sharma’s body was sent for a post-mortem, which revealed that she had been strangulated. Cops registered a case of murder and began looking for Keshav. They found Keshav in South Mumbai’s Fort area yesterday and he was detained as the prime suspect in the case.

Denial
While Keshav initially denied he was married, he confessed to it later and told cops that he was living in with Sharma despite that. He also admitted that they had a fight on Sunday, after which he left the apartment and was living in Fort since then. Cops suspect that the victim found out about her partner’s marriage and fought with him.

Malwani police are trying to find out if there are fingerprints of any other person in the house, apart from the couple and their neighbour. “We have registered the case and are interrogating Keshav,” said the officer from Malwani police station. Prajapati told cops that she did not know whether Sharma has any relatives and said she never spoke to her about her family.
