Mumbai Crime: Medical professor charged for repeated sex talk in class

A professor from a nursing college at a state-run hospital was convicted for outraging the modesty of female students by repeatedly using the word sex in his lectures

A professor from a nursing college at a state-run hospital was convicted for outraging the modesty of female students by repeatedly using the word sex in his lectures. The students alleged that the 45-year-old professor would always steer away from the subject he was teaching and discuss honeymoons and what was expected of the students during this time. The pupils also said that the professor would often give explicit details of what they should do on their first night of marriage. As per a report by the Times of India he also gave them his personal diary that he maintained of his sexual experiences as compulsory reading.


As the court was convicting the professor it said that sex was neither unholy of against decency or morality provided the subject was broached in an appropriate manner. The metropolitan magistrate said, “There is no manner of doubt that in this case, the acts of the accused and the manner of his teaching was not only unbecoming of a teacher, but was certainly with an intention to insult the modesty of girl students and to intrude upon their privacy.”


The court then allowed the professor to be released on probation while factoring in his educational qualification (PhD) and sighted that the offense was previously punishable by one year imprisonment. The court added that the professor was meant to “behave with utmost decency in his life and should not repeat his past conduct”.

An FIR was filed by a student, who was in the second year of her course. She said that the professor was the first to take lectures and used to teach her and her fellow students about ailments. She alleged that the man continued to talk about sex despite being reminded the topic was

The woman said that the professor “name-called girl students and said they had affairs with ward boys and other teachers” and did not change his behavior despite a written complaint being submitted to the authorities.

When the students deposed before the court, the professor’s lawyer said that the teacher was only teaching the subject of sex. He added that the topic of sex was not obscene and fell into the ambit of “freedom of speech and expression” guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.

In their deposition to the court, the students also said that this behavior was observed by the professor’s previous batch as well. The court said that the after taking all the evidence provided into consideration, it had found that the teacher had crossed all levels of decency and morality while teaching his students.
