Bangur Nagar Police trace history-sheeter who robbed gold chains worth Rs 7 lakh after he leaves behind his phone with his Facebook account serving as a marker

This 28-year-old thought that after managing to steal over 270 gm of gold from a man relishing his ice-cream, he would escape to his hometown in Tamil Nadu. But, as is wont with his generation, he was given away by his phone - that he left behind in the struggle - and his Facebook account that directly led the cops to his doorstep. In a rare victory, the Bangur Nagar police recovered all the stolen gold worth Rs 7 lakh.

Jaspal immediately takes the phone to the Bangur Nagar police, which then starts investigating the case
How it happened
On June 26, Jaspal Singh, 58, a scriptwriter, producer and a boutique co-owner, was at an ice-cream parlour near Oshiwara bus depot and enjoying a cone on his motorcycle. He had spotted the accused, Shailendra Konar alias Stalin, sitting near the store. He then approached Singh under the pretext of asking him for an address, and before he knew it, had wrapped his fingers around the chains on his neck.

The police go through the phone and find him logged into Facebook. With it, they manage to pull out his photo to circulate and also locate his address to Goregaon in Mumbai
"I had just started my bike to go home, when he grabbed my chains. I managed to grab his collar, but he pushed me from the bike and got away with all of my chains."

Singh spotted his phone and decided to take it to the police. "At a nakabandi, I told API Dorkar about the incident and he registered the complaint."
They take the photo around and locals identify him. They inform the cops that Shailendra has already gone to his home town in Tamil Nadu
Police investigates
The Bangur Nagar police officials saw that he was logged into Facebook. With it, they managed to access his photo along with other identifying details, including his locality in Bhagat Singh Nagar, Goregaon West. The cops then circulated his photo there and he was identified by locals who tipped the police that he had returned to his village Koli Patti near Shivkashi in Tamil Nadu. "We surrounded his house, but he jumped off from the first floor and ran away.

The police then head to Tamil Nadu and locate his home. But, he manages to again escape from the first floor, and is only nabbed after a 12-km chase
We managed to catch him after chasing him for some 12km," an official added. "We have arrested the accused and managed to recovered all the robbed property. He is accused of several other crimes in Bangur Nagar and Goregaon police station, including assault and molestation," said ACP S Shinde from Goregaon division.
