A 30-year-old househelp, who works at an apartment in Neelamber Building on Peddar Road, lodged a rape complaint against a driver on Thursday with Gamdevi police.

The following day, the police picked up Shatrukhan Juggeshwar Paswan, 32, from Samastipur in Bihar. The house help had met Paswan a year ago, and developed a relationship with him.

“Paswan worked for a family in the same building as the maid,” said Rajaram Prabhu, senior police inspector. When he overheard her confide in a friend that she was frustrated with her employer, he befriended her and offered to help her land a new job.

Eventually, he promised to marry her. However, three months ago, she learnt that he was already married. She found herself in a fix since she was carrying his baby, and three months pregnant. When he denied to pay up for terminating the pregnancy, she requested her employer, an anchor in the entertainment industry, to lend her money.

On Thursday, when she was meant to go ahead with the abortion, Paswan fled with the cash to his hometown in Bihar. She later learnt, the police said, that he had used the money to pay for his wife’s delivery. Paswan has been booked for rape, breach of trust and criminal intimidation.
