A 96-year-old man was found murdered in his Nagpada apartment yesterday morning — his hands and legs were tied and mouth gagged. Cops are looking for the unidentified accused, based on one of his sons’ testimony. Police believe the victim, Abdul Hamid Ansari, was killed for money, as he had Rs 3 lakh in cash in his house. A cupboard inside his apartment was found damaged, but the murderers had failed to open the locker or take the money.

Ansari used to live close to four sons and three daughters. An officer from Nagpada police station said, “One of his sons, Salim, served him lunch while his grandson Warif  visited him every morning with breakfast.”

However, on Saturday, Warif arrived to find the door open and Ansari lying in bed with his limbs tied. “Warif informed his kin who called the police. The money was safe inside a cabinet. Only close family members knew about it. We have found scratch marks, possibly made by a screw driver, on the cabinet,” the officer said. He added, “We suspect someone close to the family might have come to rob the money and didn’t intend to kill Ansari. We have detained a woman as she had allegedly asked for a Rs 2 lakh loan from him.”

As of now a case under Sections 302 (murder), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt), 397 (robbery with attempt to cause death) and 452 (trespassing) have been registered against an unknown person or persons.
