On Wednesday afternoon, around 1 pm, the child had returned from school and asked her mother for something to eat. As lunch was not yet ready, the mother gave her Rs 10 and told her to buy biscuits from the nearby store. When the girl went to the shop, the owner invited her into the shop on the pretext of giving her chocolates.
When she went inside, the man molested the child and warned her of dire consequences if she told anyone about it. When the girl returned home, her mother noticed a marked difference in her behaviour. When she cajoled her into telling her what was wrong, the child finally revealed the abuse. The mother told the neighbours, who rushed to the shop and dragged the owner to Bandra police station.
"As per the complaint received from the parents, we have arrested the 48-year-old shopkeeper. We are also checking whether he molested other girls from his neighborhood," said a police officer. "The accused has been booked under IPC section 354 (sexual harassment) and relevant sections of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act," the officer said.
