A woman was arrested by Oshiwara police for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh from her relative’s house to chase her dream of becoming a model. Police said the woman was in need of money to prepare a portfolio to enter modelling as she wasn't able to earn since the lockdown. Around 40 gram gold ornaments were recovered from the accused which she had sold to jewellers.

The accused, identified as Sheetal Nagraj Gholap, is a resident of Salim Sayyed Chawl at Kranti Nagar, Behram Baug, Jogeshwari (West). The victim, Sunita Agvane, is her relative and resident of Saileela society at Ganesh Nagar near Adarsh Nagar at Jogeshwari (West). Earlier Sheetal was working in Star health insurance as an adviser but left her job before the lockdown, police said.

PSI Tushar Sawant of Oshiwara police station told mid-day, "Before Dusshera, Sheetal went to her relative Sunita's house to meet her. At that time, Sunita along with her entire family were getting ready to go to relative’s place. Sheetal intentionally forgot her mobile phone at Sunita's house. Sunita's family then locked the flat and left with Sheetal. The accused later told Sunita that she forgot her mobile phone at her house and asked for the house keys to collect it. Sunita gave her the keys and Sheetal then stole few gold ornaments from her house.”

"On Dusshera, Sheetal again intentionally forgot mobile phone at Sunita’s house when she and her family were going to their relative’s palce. Sheetal then asked for the house keys and stole few more gold ornaments. When Sunita and her family returned they realized that jewellery was missing from the cupboard. She then approached Oshiwara police station and registered an FIR against unknown person (s) under IPC section 380 (theft)," added the PSI.

Interrogation revealed that Sheetal had been frequently visiting Sunita’s house. On being questioned, Sheetal confessed to the crime.

“She confessed to stealing the jewellery to make her career in modelling. We arrested her and recovered 40 grams gold ornaments including gold chain, locket, ring and gold queen necklace worth Rs 2 lakh from a local jeweler she sold them to. The accused was produced on Saturday in a local court and released on bail," senior inspector Dayanand Bangar of Oshiwara police station said.
