The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Friday Dossier

Seat of the matter
Tradition has always played a big role in Mumbai cricket, but you’d screw your face in disgust after seeing a photograph that the Mumbai Cricket Association sent to the media to announce their under-23 team’s CK Nayudu Trophy victory over Madhya Pradesh at Indore.

In the photograph, support staff and officials are seated in the front row while the Mumbai under-23 players, who were the ones chiefly responsible for the triumph, are in the behind row. Also, don’t miss some of the players’ dark glasses, which could have been put away for a team photograph.

Compare this to a photograph (left) of Ajit Wadekar’s Irani Cup-winning Mumbai team of 1972. Notice how all the senior players are seated while the juniors are behind them. There is only one official in the picture – seated on the left. Times have changed, but it does not mean the stakeholders of cricket should cease to do things well.

Models and macarons
It was a match made in heaven — scones, mini quiches and tarts, carrot cake, banana caramel cake and beautiful clothes.

Fashion designer Arpita Mehta launched her Spring Summer collection at macaron queen Pooja Dhingra’s new Colaba cafe. Pernia Qureshi, Kunal Rawal, Karishma Tanna and Anshula Kapoor mingled over breezy summer silhouettes and some yummy treats whipped up by Dhingra.

Astrobiology with literature! Really?
A scholarship from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to study astrobiology with English literature. What more can an 18-year-old want?

Well, this dream, which came true for the girl from Madhyamgram in West Bengal and catapulted her to news, has come to a shattering end. NASA has denied offering her the Goddard Internship Programme.

The reason being that the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies has no facilities in London and all of the institute’s internships are awarded to students who live within 50 miles of its location in New York City.

Young school students are often misled and tricked but the fact that the discerning adult world landed her in this embarrassing situation is unfortunate.
